Withdraw, Make Non-Discoverable, or Delete an Item

DSpace has a few distinct methods for removing content from view or from discovery in the repository.

Withdraw an item: This method entail removal of an Item from the archive. However, a withdrawn item is still available to Administrative users (and may optionally be restored to the archive at a later date). A withdrawn item disappears from DSpace (except from Administrative screens).
Make an item non-discoverable (aka making it Private): A non-discoverable (or "private") item is one that is simply hidden from all search/browse/OAI results, and is therefore only accessible via direct link (or bookmark).
Delete an item: The item is permanently expunged from the archive.

Navigating to the Item

For any item you wish to remove from the repository to any of the above states, you must first log in as an Administrator and navigate to the item you wish to change. From the Brief Item view for your selected item, click on the pencil icon in the top right corner of the screen

This will take you to the Edit Item screen with tabs to allow you to edit different aspects of the item record.
Click on the Status tab of the Edit Item view

From the Status tab, you have the ability to withdraw an item, make it non-discoverable, or to permanently delete an item.

Withdraw an Item

To remove an item from the collection but not delete it from the repository, click the Withdraw button

A view of the item’s metadata will appear with buttons at the bottom to confirm if you want to Withdraw or Cancel
A success pop up will appear in the upper right corner of the screen
The item will no longer appear in the Collection but can be located in the repository using the Admin Search with a Withdrawn tag

Make an Item Non-Discoverable

To make an item non-discoverable (or private), click the Make it non-discoverable button

A view of the item’s metadata will appear with buttons at the bottom to confirm if you want to Make it non-discoverable or Cancel
A success pop up will appear in the upper right corner of the screen
The item will no longer appear in the Collection but can be located in the repository using the Admin Search with a Non-discoverable tag

Delete an Item

To delete an item from the repository, click the Permanently delete button

A view of the item’s metadata will appear with buttons at the bottom to confirm if you want to Delete or Cancel
A success pop up will appear in the upper right corner of the screen
Please note: There will not be a tombstone record once the item is deleted
