Register for the QGIS Webinar Series

Join us this summer for the QGIS webinar series!

QGIS is open-source and free GIS software available on Mac, Windows, and Linux from here: https://qgis.org/. Absolutely no prior GIS experience is required to fully participate in these webinars.

Webinar #1: 3D Modeling of Library Spaces Using QGIS

  • Day/Time: Wednesday, July 26 – 3:00-4:30 PM CST

  • Presenters: Michael Shensky (UT Austin) and Katherine Strickland (UT Austin)

  • Description: In spring 2023 the UT Libraries worked with students in the UT Austin Master of Science in Information Technology and Management program on a  project to create a 3D interactive model of the Perry-Castaneda Library (PCL) Map Room that could be deployed as a web app. This project resulted in the successful development of a new web app that was created using open source software and which will allow patrons to locate maps when visiting the PCL Map Room in-person and explore the collection virtually. This webinar will provide an overview of this web app’s development and show how others can use open source tools like QGIS for creating similar interactive 3D models of library spaces.

Webinar #2: Researching Your Community with QGIS

  • Day/Time: Wednesday, August 2 – 3:00-4:30 PM CST

  • Presenters: Kate McNally Carter (University of Houston) and Joshua Been (Baylor University)

  • Description: In this webinar, you will learn how you can use open source GIS software to map and analyze features of your local community. Focusing on open data sources, the presenters will walk through the process of locating, loading, and preparing data for analysis. Participants will also gain hands-on practice in analyzing a statewide database. No prior experience with GIS is required. We recommend that participants download the current version of QGIS before the webinar to participate in the hands-on activity during the session.

Registration for these webinars is open to anyone! Both GISIG webinars will be recorded and archived on the TDL YouTube channel.
