Hierarchies are displayed and organized by category in a triptych in Vireo. It is a visual aid to see the relationships between parent and child organizations that will only be visible when Hierarchical Organization Management is turned ON.
When the triptych is collapsed, the circled numbers next to an organization name indicates how many related children are attached to that organization.
In the example below, we see that the parent College B has 3 child organizations/workflows related to it.
Clicking on College B will open up the second pane of the triptych where the child organizations/workflows can be seen.
We can expand the third pane of the triptych by clicking on M.S. Thesis which has two related child organizations/workflows.
Up to 3 levels can be viewed at a time: parent, child, grandchild (ie College B / M.S. Thesis / Biology and Business in the example below). At each level the organizations are displayed in alphabetical order.
Benefits of Hierarchies
Enabling Hierarchical Organization Management allows child organizations/workflows to inherit (or copy) the settings of parent levels. Replicating a parent record ensures consistency and makes it easier to create new workflows and edit existing ones. Settings which would apply to all levels of a hierarchy should be made a the highest applicable level, then only minimal customizations are needed to at the child levels.
If Hierarchical Organization Management is disabled, multiple workflows can still be created but they will be unrelated. Initial set up and all changes will be done individually and there will be no triptych.
